Relaxed route: Castelldefels → Zaragoza (29 Aug – 7 Sep)

This page's map and route are shown as the current Proposed plan 01 — Vall de Núria — the dated day-by-day table now lives there, not here. This page is the reasoning: why the route runs the way it does, what got traded away, and what's still open. The with-Ordesa alternative (this page's design pre-26 Aug 2026) is kept live too — see the head-to-head for how the two compare.

The touring days sit between two booked bookends: Alessio's solo wingfoil days end Fri 28 Aug when Elisabeth lands (see Alessio's solo start & meeting Elisabeth); Sat 29 Aug they rent a car together and set off. Both their return flights leave from Zaragoza (ZAZ): Elisabeth Sun 6 Sep, 10:10, Alessio Tue 8 Sep, 15:45.

Elisabeth's early Sunday departure shapes the last few days: to avoid a brutal wake-up they need to be in or very near Zaragoza the night of Sat 5 Sep, not still out at Loarre/Montearagón. That turns the last two days into Zaragoza-based days rather than more driving — which happens to line up with Alessio wanting a couple of solo days there afterward.

Decided 26 Aug 2026: Núria in, Ordesa out

Elisabeth added Vall de Núria to the top picks, and Ordesa Valley is dropped — too far north and too tight to reach once the trip starts at the far eastern end of the range.

The two changes are connected. Núria sits east of Castelldefels' latitude, at the head of the Freser valley — it doesn't shorten the run to La Seu d'Urgell, it lengthens it: 2h17 out to Queralbs plus 1h49 on to La Seu, against 2h33 driving straight to La Seu before. That extra half-day has to come from somewhere, and Ordesa — which needed a transfer day and a dedicated hiking day, both at the far north-west end — is what pays for it.

So from Castillo de Samitier the route now takes the southern road: Aínsa → Barbastro → Montearagón (~104 km, ~1h33), rather than climbing north to Torla and the Ordesa gateway. Everything from Samitier westward stays as it was — Montearagón, Loarre, then Zaragoza.

Net cost: ~962 km / ~16h42 across Sat 29 – Sat 5, versus ~787 km / ~13h08 in the Ordesa-based version. More driving overall, but spread differently: two nights parked at Congost de Mont-Rebei and a genuinely empty buffer day on Sat 5 Sep, instead of one long dedicated hike day.

Núria has no road — this is a real constraint, not a detail

"Vall de Núria mountain resort cannot be accessed by car. It can only be reached via the Rack Railway" (Turistren/FGC, checked 26 Aug 2026). The rental car stops at Queralbs, and the last stretch is the cremallera (12.5 km, 40 min, +1,000 m) or the Camí Vell on foot (7.3 km, +940 m).

That has two knock-on effects worth deciding early:

  • Where Saturday's night is spent — up in the valley (Hotel Vall de Núria, car left at Queralbs overnight) or down in Queralbs / Ribes de Freser. Sleeping up top makes the afternoon longer and the Sunday morning tighter, since the first descent is ~08:35.
  • Whether Sunday's Ball Cerdà is reachable at all. It runs 11:30–13:00 in La Seu d'Urgell, 1h49 away. First train down at 08:35 makes it, barely, with nothing going wrong. The Seu Folk block from 17:30 onward is reachable regardless — and is the part Alessio actually wanted.

The idea: one directional sweep, not an east/west trade-off

Overview → What's assumed flags a real tension: the Vall de Boí/Vielha/La Seu cluster (east) and the Aragón castles/Leyre cluster (west) are ~300 km apart, and Options A/B/C each pick one side because they all start/end at Zaragoza. Starting from Castelldefels instead changes that: the east cluster is now roughly on the way rather than a detour, so this route sweeps east → west in one line — Núria, La Seu, Vall de Boí, then Ribagorça (Congost de Mont-Rebei/Tombetes/Benabarre/Graus), then Samitier, then the western castles, ending near Zaragoza for the flight. No forced choice between sides.

Open in Google Maps for turn-by-turn — Elisabeth's own past route sketch (see Flights & a seaside-before-mountains extension) warned "Maps has a limit"; if this link doesn't load cleanly, split it into legs.

Deliberately left out (not silently dropped)

  • Ordesa Valley — dropped as above. Still on Top picks as an alternative; it would need the northern road out of Samitier plus a whole day, which this version doesn't have.
  • Ermita de San Úrbez — on Elisabeth's list, but it sits on the far side of the same northern massif as Ordesa; it goes with Ordesa, and leaves with it.
  • Alquézar — was dropped to make room for Ordesa in the previous version. With Ordesa now gone it could come back on the Aínsa → Montearagón southern road, but Fri 4 Sep is already two castles and ~3h of driving — it would need Sat 5 Sep's buffer.
  • Sant Martí → Pessó lakes hike — Mon 31 Aug passes through the Vall de Boí, but as a moving day with the churches to see and ~4h of driving; no room for a 6-hour hike.
  • Monasterio de Leyre — a favourite, but well west of this route; a candidate for the Sun 6 / Mon 7 secondary scenario (keeping the car and touring from Zaragoza).
  • Isaba — already "low priority" on Top picks; too far west of this line.
  • Alto Gállego stargazing (Valle de Tena/Panticosa/Lanuza) — real, confirmed sessions, but that valley is a detour north of Loarre/Montearagón, and the northern roads are exactly what this version gives up.
  • Era Hèsta de Vielha (~5–11 Sep, provisional) — this route is through the Vall de Boí area on 31 Aug, too early.

Not yet decided

  • Where to sleep on Sat 29 Aug — up in Vall de Núria or down at Queralbs / Ribes de Freser. See Vall de Núria.
  • Which side of Congost de Mont-Rebei to base on — Àger (Lleida) or Viacamp/Montfalcó (Huesca). The comparison table is on Proposed plan 01; it's worth ~1h40 of driving either way.
  • Whether Thu 3 Sep survives contact with reality — Benabarre genealogy plus the Samitier sunset hike in one day. Sat 5 Sep is deliberately empty to absorb the overflow.
  • Everything except Castelldefels (Alessio 3 nights at C31, Wed 26 → Sat 29) is unbooked — see Accommodation and TODO → Bookings. Elisabeth sleeps at a friend's near her uncle's in Vallvidrera on Fri 28 (own arrangement).
  • Car choice pending — Centauro quote in hand (~€499 for 8 days, Sants pickup 09:30 → Zaragoza- Delicias return Sun 6 Sep 09:30). Choice between KIA XCeed (Group F1, petrol) and BYD Atto 2 (Group E3, possibly full-EV — must verify before booking). See TODO → Car rental.
